The Jackson Building

Asheville, NC

The first skyscraper in Western North Carolina, The Jackson Building, was built in 1925 and still stands as an icon of North Carolina’s architectural history. It eclipsed the Independence Building in Charlotte as the tallest office building in NC and this designation was held until a few years later when the Jefferson Standard Building went up in Greensboro. When charged with restoring this one-of-a-
kind, aging structure Glass & Concrete Contracting faced challenges which required implementing unique vertical access methods and innovative repair techniques.

Restoration work over the years has included terra cotta patching, profiling and glazing; tuckpointing; duplication of missing, custom formed terra cotta units; masonry cleaning and restoration; window unit waterproofing; replacing broken Spanish roof tiles; anchoring and stabilizing parapet wall spires; and application of a masonry water repellent.
