Asheville NC, always a gem for architecture lovers, hosts one of the most historically significant buildings in the southeast, The Grove Arcade. The visionary behind the Grove Park Inn, E.W. Grove, knew that downtown needed a vibrant life to thrive and so helped develop The Grove Arcade which opened its doors in 1929 as one of the first “malls” our country has ever known. But the Grove Arcade is no ordinary mall. The façade is built of ornate glazed terra cotta and the interior is decorated with travertine tile from floor to ceiling.
Closed during WWII and then remaining under-utilized for decades, the Grove reopened in 2002 under its original purpose, as a shopping center for a vibrant downtown Asheville. |
