Former First National Bank

Johnson City, TN

Originally built as the First National Bank and later the Unaka National Bank, rumored to be the bank of Al Capone in the days of 'Little Chicago', the building now houses Freiberg's German Restaurant. This building, a premier centerpiece of downtown Johnson City, had undergone many changes since it was built in 1888. The challenge was to restore the facade with the modern updates, while still maintaining historical appeal and period character. The owner decided not to rebuild the bay windows on the northwest side and instead chose a more subdued look with custom window headers.

Glass and Concrete Contracting worked on the exterior of the building during the fall months of 2007. We added spires atop the engaged columns; preserved the original window millwork and added masonry lion head accents and custom window headers; cleaned and restored masonry; and applied protective coatings to the architectural metalwork.

Client: Michael Mansy

Program: Full exterior restoration
